January Reads

1st Feb 2015 in Books

For me, January was a month of snow, snoozing and big fat books. I finished 2014 by getting emergency back surgery (which came as a surprise to everyone, me and the doctors included). That meant that January was mostly spent on bed-rest, which was pretty boring but did mean I got a lot of reading done. Thirty books, to be exact! Usually I’d pick a top 3 every month, but I read so many wonderful books that it was too hard to choose. Here are the best:

  • Rivers of London, Ben Aaronovitch – magicians committing and solving crimes in modern London.
  • All the Truth That’s In Me, Julie Berry – beautifully-written historical YA.
  • Days of Grace, Catherine Hall – I’ve never cried so much at a book.
  • NOS4R2, Joe Hill – so vivid and creepy. One of my favourite horror novels.
  • Only Ever Yours, Louise O’Neill – a terrifying and thoughtful feminist dystopia.
  • Girls Will be Girls, Emer O’Toole – get this book for every teenage girl you know. Wish I’d read it when I was 13.
  • The Hourglass Factory, Lucy Ribchester – suffragettes and circuses in Victorian London (this isn’t in the photo as I lent it to my mum!)

Keep seeing The Hourglass Factory, need to give it a go sometime! Jill Lepore’s Secret History of Wonder Woman was my January fav.
